Not far from the Chilean town of Puerto Rio Tranquilo, on the shores of Lake General Carrera, which straddles Chile and Argentina, is a stunning geological wonder known locally as the "Marble Church" (Capilla de Marmol), Along with Easter Island and Baine National Park, it is listed as the seven Wonders of Chile.
The "Marble Church" is nearly 6,000 years old and is actually a series of marble caves with sculptural columns and unique textures. These marbles originally belong to the crust of the earth, with the passage of time, the marble from the bottom of the lake was squeezed out of the lake, after tens of thousands of years of lake abrasion to form a stone cave, like a magnificent "palace". Known by local devotees as the Marble Church, it is a masterpiece of nature and one of the most beautiful caves in the world.
The Marble caves are located below the precipice of the lake and can only be visited by boat, or you can enter the larger caves to see the crisscrossing textures of the rock surface up close.
In early spring, the shallow water is turquoise, creating crystalline glimmers on the swirling walls of the cave. In the summer, the water level rises, forming a deep blue hue that gives the cave a unique mysterious color. The freezing and melting of the surrounding glaciers has severely affected the water level. It also comes from these glaciers, where the lake carries away sediment from the bottom of the lake.
The bottom of the cave is reduced to thin columns by the erosion of the lake over thousands of years, and the shape of the stone cave is ever-changing. The minerals and impurities in the marble make the stone wall appear yellow, green, gray, white and other colors, and no stone wall pattern and pattern are the same. General Carrera Lake, where the marble church is located, is the largest glacial lake in South America, where the melting water of the glacier shows turquoise color under the refraction of the sun, and then reflects on the marble, showing a picturesque blue green dream. The lake is clear, the pillar under the water is clearly visible, and the stone grain jumps under the water with a graceful light and shadow, which makes people intoxicated.
The best time of year to visit the Marble Cave is around September to February, when the ice on the lake melts and the color of the water is a particularly charming turquoise. In terms of time, the best time to take a boat trip is early in the morning to capture the best light and take beautiful photos.
Although the journey is long and challenging, many agree that these stunning views are definitely worth the effort!
