From Block to Memorial: How We Cut Natural Stone into Lasting Tombstones

At Fortune East Stone, we believe every memorial should stand the test of time. But before a finished tombstone or headstone ever reaches a cemetery, it begins as a raw block of natural stone — cut with precision, shaped by expertise, and finished with care.

In this article, we show you exactly how we transform massive stone slabs into custom monument and tombstone products. Watch our factory cutting video below, and see the real process behind every granite memorial.

Above is a real clip from our production floor. You are looking at a high-precision multi-blade gang saw cutting through a solid block of natural stone. This is the first major step in creating a durable, beautiful tombstone.

This finished headstone was made directly from the same slab shown in the video. No middlemen. No material switching. What you see is what you get — consistent quality from block to final product.

Step-by-Step: How We Turn Stone into Tombstones

1. Block Selection

We start with high-density natural stone blocks. Every block is inspected for cracks, color consistency, and structural integrity. Only the strongest material moves to cutting.

2. Gang Saw Cutting

Large blocks are fed into multi-blade gang saws. These machines cut the block into uniform slabs in one pass. Each slab later becomes one or more tombstone units.

3. Surface Processing

Slabs go through polishing, honing, or flamed finishing — depending on the final use. For headstone applications, polished surfaces are the most common choice.

4. CNC Shaping & Lettering

Using CNC routers, we cut the monument shape, round edges, and engrave names, dates, or custom designs. This is where a flat slab becomes a personalized tombstone.

5. Final Inspection & Packing

Every finished granite memorial is inspected for chips, scratches, or uneven surfaces. Then it is carefully packed in foam-wrapped wooden crates for export.

Granite and other natural stone materials naturally resist rain, freeze-thaw cycles, and UV fading. A well-made tombstone can last for centuries with minimal maintenance.

Key Advantages of Our Production Process

✅ Direct from slab to finished tombstone – no material substitution
✅ Factory-controlled cutting – consistent thickness and flatness
✅ CNC precision – sharp lettering and smooth curves for every headstone
✅ No minimum order on raw slabs – flexible for small cemeteries or large projects
✅ Stone type can be customized – we do not limit you to one specific granite variety

Note: We have intentionally not listed specific granite types in this article. Contact our team to discuss available colors and origins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can you make a tombstone from my own design?

Yes. Send us a drawing or photo. We will cut the headstone shape from our natural stone slabs using CNC machines.

Q2: How thick are your tombstone slabs?

Standard thickness ranges from 2cm to 10cm. Thicker slabs are used for larger monument bases.

Q3: Do you sell only finished tombstones or also raw slabs?

Both. We supply raw natural stone slabs for local fabricators, as well as fully finished tombstone products for direct installation.

Q4: How long does cutting take?

A single slab takes 2–4 hours on the gang saw. Complete tombstone production (cutting + polishing + engraving) takes 5–10 working days.

Q5: Do you guarantee the stone quality?

Yes. Every granite or natural stone slab is inspected before cutting. If internal cracks appear during processing, we replace the material at no extra cost.
